Eco group at the Schools– Background:

Why?

In spring 2008 we joined the “Eco-schools” initiative (eco-schools.org.uk), in line with the Government’s drive that all schools shall be sustainable by 2020.

Goal?

Our long-term goal is to increase pupil’s awareness about sustainability, which in this context stands for care, for oneself, each other and the environment.

How?

We are now working towards silver rewards as specified by “Eco-schools” (http://www.eco-schools.org.uk/), by focusing on one of 9 topics per term, in a rolling rota over three years. Each topic is presented by the Eco group to the rest of the school, with every child and member of staff taking an active part. We stress that each topic is being looked at in a cross-curriculum manner, not as an ‘add-on’.

We keep you informed by updating this web page termly in arrears.

What?

The nine topics we cover are (in an order decided termly by the children):

  • Water
  • Waste
  • Energy
  • Transport
  • Litter
  • Biodiversity
  • Healthy Living
  • School Grounds
  • Global Perspectives

Who?

The Eco-group is specifically pupil-led and has members from the Year 1,2 and 3 groups of children, parents, teachers and governors. We are also members of the Mole Valley Eco-group led by Ashcombe School in Dorking.
